Q: Wholesale Inquiries
Do I ever wholesale my items?
A:
Yes, on occasion I do sell some of my items wholesale to shops. Use the Contact Me form, for more information on this.
Q: Drawing Eyes
What medium do you use to draw your eyes, and how do you make them look real?
A:
I first draw mine out with artist's pencils. I free hand mine, but you can make a template to trace around. These pencils can be found at an art supply store, or even at Wal-mart. They can be used like colored pencils, or you can wet them for a darker more bold saturation of color. I use both artists' pencils and acrylic to detail the eyes. The outer circle of the iris should be a tad darker than the center (closer to the pupil). A straight pin with a ball tip on it is what I usually use to dot the pupil with, and a smaller tipped straight pin is used to dot the white highlight. Believe it or not, I also use makeup to shade the eye and nose area with - it's so easy to blend! The final step is to use a clear sealer, to prevent your work from fading or smearing.
Q: Staining Techniques
What do you find is best to use to stain fabrics to achieve an aged look?
A:
I mix about 2 - 3 TBS instant coffee with HOT water - the coffee to water ratio determines how dark you want the stain to be. I like to first soak muslin in the mixture, wring out, then dry and press the wrinkles out. I've used a clothes dryer, which works great, but you have to make sure you wipe it down good afterward, so as to not stain your clothing on the next load! I also will re-stain the fabric after I've made the doll body/head and have it stuffed. This can be tricky - sometimes the mixture will absorb more heavily in some places, and that can leave you with a spotty face. When it's time to dry my stuffed body, I like to use a hair dryer, as it's fast and the heat darkens the stain as well. To get a grungy/grubby look - mix in a little cinnamon into the coffee mixture and grab some of it onto your brush as you dip. This is great for crows, black dolls, etc.
Q: Vintage Finds
I'm often asked where I find my vintage fabrics, trims, wool, etc.
A:
First I would try your local thrift stores - they are my favorite place in the world, to find vintage treasures. Yard sales, estate sales and antique fairs are good too, but the latter two can sometimes be a little pricier than my budget.
